WORD HUNT
by
Ssorg Software
P.O. Box 621331
Orlando, Fl 32862
DESCRIPTION
Word Hunt is basically a word search-and-find puzzle program.
In this puzzle a square grid filled with letters is displayed on
the screen along with a list of words. The object of the game is to
find all the words on the list. These words can be in any
direction, forward, backward, up or down but always in a straight
line. The program can provide different levels of play. The
playing level determines the size of the grid as well as the number
of directions the words could be placed in. The program comes with
a data file of approximately 1400 words that are used in creating
the puzzle. The words are randomly chosen from the file. The user
can also enter their own words (up to 20) from which the program
will create the puzzle. The program provides a number of special
features. These include the ability to: save a puzzle to be
completed later, change screen colors, print the puzzle or save it
as an ASCII text file, and a "Boss" key to display a fake DOS
screen. There are no special hardware requirements for the program.
The game can be run off a single floppy disk and can be run in
color or monochrome mode.
INSTALLATION
Floppy Disk - The program can be run as is from a single floppy
disk. To do this switch to the drive that has the
disk in and enter "WORDHUNT".
Hard Disk - The program "WORDHUNT.EXE" needs several files to
be in the current directory or path for the program
to work right. An install program has been included
to set this up for you. Enter the program disk drive
letter, colon, and the word "INSTALL" to run it. (i.e.
if the program disk is in A drive type "A:INSTALL"
and hit the enter key)
STARTING
Before starting the program all users should read the
LICENSE.DOC file. This file contains important license information
regarding the use of WORD HUNT 2.3. When the program is started it
will first check for the existence of the "COLORS.WH" file. If the
file exists the program will read the file to determine the screen
colors to be used. If the file is not found the game will use the
default colors. The program will then display the main menu on the
screen (see figure 1).

The first five choices determine the skill level of the
program. These can be either big or small, hard or easy. The size
refers to the size of the grid. If you pick small the grid is
10 by 10 and if you pick large its 20 by 20. The difficulty level
you choose will determine the direction of the words in the grid.
If you pick "easy" the words are vertical and horizontal. If you
pick hard they can also be diagonal. Choice "1" uses only two
directions, left to right and top to bottom. This is a good choice
for beginners and children just learning to read.
Option 6 displays directory of uncompleted puzzles previously
saved to files (see Figure 2). You can save any puzzle you are
currently working on and bring it up later using this option.

A saved puzzle can be called up by highlighting it and hitting the
enter key. All puzzles are saved to DOS files with the ".WHP" as
the extension.
The program comes with a data file of approximately 1400
words that are used in creating the puzzle. The words are randomly
chosen from this file. You also have the option, by picking number
7 from the main menu, for entering your own words (see Figure 3).

You can enter up to 20 words as long as no word is longer than 10

program create the puzzle for you. The program will ask you the

Picking number 8 brings up a screen for changing the colors
used by the program (see Figure 4). You can pick any of 16

colors and replace them with an alternate color for the program to
use. Please remember that screen background colors are restricted
to low intensity colors. These are the first eight colors displayed
on the screen.
PLAYING
While solving the puzzle several options can be called up
using the function keys. A list of these options is displayed at
the bottom of the screen. F1 will exit you from the puzzle back to
the main menu, F2 will have the program show you the solution to
the puzzle, F3 will save the incomplete puzzle to a file to be
solved later and F4 will print the puzzle.
Note - If you use F4 to print the puzzle the format
will be slightly different and your printer
might not support the standard IBM graphic
characters for drawing the lines. If your
printer has an emulation that supports the
IBM symbol set you should use that.
If the program was started with the "/F" switch from the command
line (i.e. WORDHUNT /F) using F4 will redirect the printing option
to an ASCII file of your choice. This is useful for those who
would like to import these puzzles into their word processors and
desktop publishers. A boss button has been included for those who
like to play at work (g). When you hit this key (<ESC>) a fake DOS
screen is displayed until another key is hit.
To mark the ends of a word found in the grid just hit the
enter key when the cursor is under the first character and last
character of what you think is the word. You can use the arrow keys
to move the cursor around inside the grid. In addition if you have
a separate numerical keypad the Pg-Up, Pg-Dn, Home and End keys
will move you diagonally. You can exit out of any action by hitting
the <Esc> key.
If you have a monochrome monitor the displays might be easier
to see in two color mode. The program can be run in monochrome mode
using the /M option. To use it enter "WORDHUNT /M" at the DOS
prompt and the screens will be displayed in just two colors.
DISTRIBUTION
All shareware distributors, disk vendors and computer clubs
who wish to distribute the Word Hunt 2.3 package should refer the
VENDOR.DOC file for information. All BBS SYSOPs should refer to
SYSOP.DOC file. All others should refer to the LICENSE.DOC file.
REGISTRATION
Word Hunt is a "shareware program" and is provided at no
charge to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your
friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to
provide personal computer users with quality software without high
prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to continue to
develop new products. If you find this program useful and find
that you are using Word Hunt and continue to use Word Hunt after a
reasonable trial period (15 Days), you must make a registration
payment of $15. This registration payment will give you the legal
right to continue to use "Word Hunt". In addition, all registered
users of Word Hunt are entitled to 90 Days of technical support,
a full User's Guide, all documentation, the latest version of
the program, and a free copy of a great game called "Crypto Clue".
To assist you in registering a text file of the registration
form, REGISTER.FRM is included on this disk. At the DOS prompt
enter:
COPY REGISTER.FRM PRN
This will copy the form to your local printer. If you do not have
a printer just write your name, address, and where you got the
program on a plain sheet of paper. Send this along with a check or
money order for $15 U.S. funds (plus $2 S/H) to:
Ssorg Software /WH
P.O. Box 621331
Orlando, FL 32862
You will be sent confirmation of your registration, along with
all documentation and your free game. Please address queries for
information on site licenses and group discounts.
